The Emotional Soundscape: The Missing Layer of Trauma-Informed Design

Architects and designers spend a great deal of time thinking about how buildings sound.

We consider speech privacy, reverberation, mechanical noise, sound transmission, acoustic separation, and the relationship between noisy and quiet functions. We specify absorptive materials, acoustic ceilings, partitions, doors, and other systems intended to make spaces more comfortable and functional.

But people do not experience buildings as empty acoustic containers.

They experience other people inside them.

The sound of a human voice carries more than volume. It can carry curiosity, warmth, irritation, urgency, criticism, belonging, exclusion, collaboration, conflict, or reassurance. A conversation can interfere with concentration because it is loud, but it can also interfere because of what it communicates. Another conversation at the same volume may barely interrupt us at all.

This is what I think of as the emotional soundscape of a space: the acoustic, vocal, and relational environment people experience while trying to do whatever they came into that building to do.

The same office can contain two very different soundscapes

Consider two workstations within the same design office.

The first sits near the main entrance, reception area, a conference room, and primary circulation routes. Employees arrive and greet one another nearby. Phones ring. Visitors enter. Administrative conversations occur within earshot. People repeatedly move between work areas, meeting rooms, restrooms, and support spaces.

The employee seated there may not be involved in most of those interactions, yet must continually absorb them.

A door opens. Someone arrives. A conversation begins behind the workstation. Someone walks past. The phone rings. Another meeting starts.

None of these events is extraordinary. Together, however, they create an environment in which attention is repeatedly pulled away from concentrated work.

There may also be a feeling of being on display. Visitors can see the workstation, the papers, the computer screen, even the posture of the person working there. The employee does not simply perform a job. Some part of the person remains aware of being visible to everyone passing through the space.

Now consider a second workstation elsewhere in the same office.

It is farther from reception and primary circulation. Conversations still happen nearby, but many concern drawings, construction questions, project coordination, specifications, schedules, or problem-solving.

The second workstation may not actually be much quieter.

But the sound carries something different.

The employee can often continue working through those conversations because they do not require attention. Occasionally, the person may intentionally stop working to listen because something useful is being discussed. In a profession such as architecture, where so much learning happens through observation, participation, and exposure to real problems, those conversations may even contribute to professional development.

The difference is not simply noise versus silence.

It is the relationship between the sound and the reason the person is in the building.

Sound carries social information

Traditional acoustical analysis gives us valuable information.

How much sound travels between rooms? How long does it reverberate? Is mechanical noise interfering with speech? Can confidential conversations be overheard?

All of those questions matter.

But they do not completely describe the experience of the person hearing the sound.

Human voices carry social information.

One conversation may communicate:

There is a problem, and we are going to figure it out together.

Another may communicate:

Someone has done something wrong.

One voice may invite participation:

Do you think you can do this? What would you need?

Another may communicate judgment, urgency, or demand.

The decibel level may be similar. The effect on attention may not be.

This suggests an important distinction:

Some sounds demand involuntary attention. Other sounds invite chosen attention.

A person may be perfectly capable of concentrating while colleagues discuss a project nearby, yet immediately lose that concentration when another kind of conversation enters the room.

And recovery matters too. An unwanted sound does not necessarily stop affecting someone the moment it ends. A person whose attention has been pulled away may need time to settle, reorient, and return to the cognitive task that was interrupted.

That lost concentration is part of the experience of the building.

Architecture cannot fix human behavior, but it can shape exposure to it

There is an important limit to this idea.

Architecture cannot turn a critical workplace culture into a collaborative one. Acoustic panels cannot manufacture kindness. A wall cannot make someone curious, respectful, or emotionally regulated.

But architecture can determine how widely human behavior is broadcast.

Reception and administrative functions can be acoustically separated from focused work areas. Workstations can be oriented away from heavy circulation. Small enclosed rooms can give people somewhere to concentrate without leaving the workplace entirely. Absorptive materials can reduce the distance voices travel. Doors, partitions, spatial zoning, and thoughtful adjacencies can give people greater control over what they must hear.

This does not mean every person should sit alone behind a closed door.

Collaborative sound can be valuable.

People learn by overhearing questions. Teams solve problems spontaneously. Junior staff gain knowledge simply by being near experienced colleagues. Informal conversation can create belonging and connection.

The goal is therefore not perfect silence.

The goal is appropriate exposure and meaningful choice.

A person might enjoy the energy of an open studio for most of the morning and need forty-five minutes of quiet concentration in the afternoon.

A good workplace can support both.

The same principle appears in restaurants

Consider a familiar neighborhood restaurant.

It may be objectively noisy. People are talking, dishes are moving, servers are passing through, and music may be playing.

Yet the space can still feel comfortable.

Booths provide partial enclosure. Familiar patterns of activity make the environment predictable. Conversations have some territorial boundary. A person can sit with friends and feel that the table belongs, at least temporarily, to the people occupying it.

Now consider a restaurant with similar sound levels but little spatial definition. Tables are close together. Hard surfaces reflect voices throughout the room. A large group or loud conversation can dominate the entire space. Everyone hears everyone else.

The issue is not simply whether the restaurant is loud.

It is whether people have any control over their exposure to the people around them.

Someone came to the restaurant to eat, connect, celebrate, or relax.

The architecture can support that purpose or quietly interfere with it.

Privacy is not only for secrets

A hair salon provides another example.

Open-plan salons are efficient. A row of chairs, mirrors, and workstations allows staff to move easily and use space effectively.

But efficiency does not describe the entire human experience.

Imagine closely spaced stations with little visual separation. Mirrors extend from eye level to the floor. Chairs rotate as stylists work, sometimes directing one customer's voice toward another. Conversations travel easily between stations. Bright ceiling fixtures sit directly in the sightline of customers reclining at wash stations.

Nothing about that arrangement necessarily prevents the salon from functioning.

But a customer may feel on display.

The person may not be discussing anything confidential. They may simply prefer not to have ordinary conversation projected toward strangers.

That distinction matters.

Privacy is not only necessary when we have something secret to say.

Sometimes people simply want to speak without becoming part of everyone else's environment.

Partial-height partitions, more deliberate station orientation, smaller visual fields, acoustic absorption, appropriately scaled mirrors, and softer lighting could change that experience substantially without turning every salon station into a separate room.

Exposure is both acoustic and visual

This raises a broader issue.

Sound is rarely experienced by itself.

We hear while we also see, move, touch, smell, orient ourselves, and remain aware of other people.

A workstation beside a busy corridor may create acoustic exposure and visual exposure simultaneously.

A salon may expose both the body and the conversation.

A waiting room may force strangers to sit directly facing one another while hearing every phone call at reception.

A restaurant may provide excellent food while offering no place where a quieter conversation can occur.

The emotional soundscape therefore belongs within a larger discussion of human exposure in architecture.

How visible must someone be?

How audible must they be?

How much of everyone else's behavior must they absorb?

And how much choice do they have?

Buildings are rarely occupied by one theoretical person

Architectural evaluation often imagines a singular person moving through space.

Can the person enter the building?

Can they reach the restroom?

Can they move through the corridor?

Can they approach the counter?

Can they understand the wayfinding?

Can they find an exit?

These are essential questions.

But the person will almost never be alone.

They will move through a building filled with people who are talking, laughing, arguing, teaching, rushing, waiting, working, complaining, helping, interrupting, and occupying space alongside them.

Those people become part of the architectural experience.

Perhaps we should therefore ask additional questions:

Can someone find a place where conversation feels private?

Can they move away from an interaction without leaving the building entirely?

Are there choices between social and quieter seating?

Does circulation repeatedly cut through areas intended for concentration?

Are employees forced to absorb conversations unrelated to their work?

Does one acoustically dominant zone spill across the entire building?

Are there places to recover from sensory or social overload?

Can a person participate when they want connection and retreat when they need concentration?

These are architectural questions.

Designing for what people came there to do

Perhaps one of the simplest questions we can ask about a building is:

What did this person come here to do?

They may have come to work.

Learn.

Heal.

Eat dinner.

Get their hair cut.

Attend a performance.

Travel.

Meet someone.

Think.

Rest.

A good building should help them do that.

That means considering circulation, accessibility, lighting, temperature, materials, acoustics, privacy, sensory conditions, and spatial choice.

But it also requires acknowledging something architecture can sometimes treat as background:

Humans do not simply interact with buildings. They interact with other humans through buildings.

Walls influence who hears whom.

Circulation determines who passes whose desk.

Seating determines who feels exposed.

Partitions influence whether ordinary conversation becomes public conversation.

Acoustic boundaries determine which human interactions become everybody else's interactions.

And choices in zoning, orientation, refuge, visibility, and enclosure can determine whether a person remains engaged with the reason they came into the building in the first place.

The emotional soundscape is not a replacement for acoustical design.

It is another layer of understanding what acoustics mean to actual people.

Because the question is not only:

How does sound travel through this building?

It is also:

What is that sound carrying, who is required to absorb it, and does the environment help people do what they came here to do?

That is a question architecture can begin to answer.
